Making Damascus (Pattern Welded Steel)

This course will teach you how to fire weld steel as it has been done for centuries, with instruction in:

  • Material selection
  • Pattern development
  • Normalising, annealing and heat treatment
  • finishing techniques

We will make a billet of 240- 300 layers in a random or ladder pattern with a final bar dimension of approximately 300-380mm long by 30-35mm wide by 6-9mm thick. This is enough steel to make 3 or 4 blades (dependent on blade size)

The cost is $850 which covers

  • full tutorials,
  • materials,
  • use of tools,
  • safety equipment,
  • workshop consumables,
  • insurance,
  • morning and afternoon teas both days,
  • lunch both days.

Times are negotiable. A typical weekend is:

  • Fri: 7:30 - 9:30pm
  • Sat: 8am - 6pm
  • Sun: 8am - 6pm

Keith prefers only 2 people per course as this maintains the highest level of instruction and use of equipment. Participant need to wear appropriate clothing and footwear. At the conclusion of each course the participant will have crafted a unique handmade tool.

Tahmoor Inn (3km away) is suggested at competitive rates  that include a continental breakfast. Phone: (02) 4681 8505 for the current costs.
